Chapter 10: Jonghyun II

His name was Kim Jonghyun. He knew that. He was the only son of the Kim Construction and he sure knew he was rich. He had a girlfriend and he was happy with their relationship. He had friends; two from the Lee family and one from the Choi family.

It was just that he was confused as to why he hadn’t gotten to see them often like what he had in his memory.

Kim Jonghyun knew he lost a part of his memory and when he asked his parents about what kind of memory was it, they answered him with a forced smile, saying: It was nothing important that you have to worry about.

He was curious to be honest. He felt like forgetting something rather important. If it was really not that important like what his parents said, then how come he couldn’t get it out of his mind for years?

It was one night when Jonghyun trashed around on his bed. He had this dream and he couldn’t name when it happened.

“Jonghyun, what did you do to him?”

“How do we stop him from crying now?”

“He is so meanie! He teased me and pushed me down!”

“You are also cute, hyung!”

It was depressing. Jonghyun was awake in the midnight with a massive headache and he groaned lowly. It was so familiar. It was like it did happen before. It was like it was that important thing that he had forgotten.

“What was it!?”

Jonghyun often found himself crying himself to sleep just by thinking about that lost memory.

His girlfriend was pretty. She was smart and kind. Jonghyun was sure about it. But he didn’t felt that thumping feeling whenever he was with her. He tried holding her hand tight in his, he tried kissing her soft lips, he tried hugging her close, but none of them made any change to the way Jonghyun felt to her. As far as Jonghyun could remember, he had a very big love towards someone when he was kid and he was sure he felt all sort of nervousness and heart-thumping period when he was kid.

It didn’t feel the same.

He met her when he went to attend his company party. His mother was smiling when she came, bringing a young pretty girl with her and introduced them. His mother told him about how she liked to see them standing together and they were good for each other. Jonghyun wanted to believe that but he couldn’t.

No matter how many times they got out together, when Jonghyun saw them standing beside each other on the display window of the shop, he just couldn’t get the image right.

He saw himself, his body, standing right beside her, hands held together, but he didn’t feel like being there. He felt like somewhere else.

Jonghyun wanted to ask his friends. He remembered having Jinki hyung as his personal advisor to his every act and having Taemin as his personal pinching kid and having Minho as his personal game rival. It just felt something was gone.

He knew from his parents that Jinki hyung was going abroad to take care some things about the Lee Companies and Taemin and Minho were also going to finish their study.

He had no one to ask.

It was on one fine day when Jonghyun suddenly had nothing to do. It was his day off from working and his girlfriend just called to cancel their date because she had the sudden urgent thing in her company. Not that Jonghyun minded though; sometimes he needed times away from her.

His parents were going abroad to take care of some important business and Jonghyun was free from his parents’ judging eyes. He felt really free.

The bell of his front door rang and Jonghyun got up from the couch where he was currently watching a movie. He skipped forward; who was coming at time like this?

Jonghyun didn’t expect to see faces that he hadn’t seen for a while.

“...jinki hyung?”

“Hey, Jong. Remember me?” asked the older boy with a gentle smile and Jonghyun gulped down his saliva. He forgot how to breathe for a while and when he moved his gaze, he found the two young boys as well.

“O-Of course, I remember you! I could never forget you all! Jinki hyung, Taeminnie, Minho!”

He watched as Jinki’s smile faltered a bit before he sighed. “Yes, I hope you won’t.”

Jonghyun let them in and they all sat down on the couch, the awkward atmosphere hanging around them. No matter how close they were, Jonghyun hadn’t met them for years and it just a bit weird to see them all coming so suddenly like this.

“So... how are you all? I heard you went abroad to finish your study, Taemin, Minho? Did you finish it already?” asked Jonghyun with a smile, staring at the youngest boy. Taemin nodded at his question with an uneasy smile. They seemed really weird.

Jinki hyung took a deep breath and Jonghyun brought his attention back to him. “How about you, Jinki hyung? I heard you took care of some businesses in America? Did you do that well?”

The three of them froze at his words. Jonghyun could see it.

“Is that... what you were told?” said Jinki and Jonghyun could only nod his head. It was the truth, right? That was what his mother told him before.

Jinki hyung sighed and Jonghyun felt his chest clenched. He felt bad about this. It felt like... he was left about something.

“W-What is it?” asked Jonghyun, trying to cover his nervousness with a grin.

“I see you parents are not here, right, Jonghyun?” mumbled Jinki and Jonghyun gulped. “Y-Yeah, they are going abroad. Need more materials from other countries for the factories...”

“That’s good... because we need a very long time.”

“Long... time? For what?” Jonghyun was confused. He felt his heart was beating erratically in nervousness and he didn’t know what to do. He was afraid about something that was about to come yet he couldn’t move his limbs because he wanted to know.

“I’m going to tell you everything, Jonghyun. Everything about the truth.”

Jonghyun gaped, squeezing the armrest as he watched Jinki took a calming breath.

“You, Kim Jonghyun, know very well that you lost your memory, right?” At that question, Jonghyun nodded. “What is it that you know?”

“I... got into a small accident... and... and I lost a part of my memory... which is not really... important for me to worry about...?” His mother kept on repeating those words to him and Jonghyun chanted on it like a mantra.

He heard Taemin took a sharp intake of breath and how he squeezed Minho’s arm. Jinki closed his eyes in disbelief and Jonghyun felt he was sweating.

“You were indeed lost your memory... but it was nothing unimportant. It was even the most important thing to you, Jonghyun. Can you believe that?”

“...b-but my mother said that it was not—”

“Screw with you mother, Jonghyun! We know everything!” hissed Jinki hyung and Jonghyun was left scared. Angry Jinki was scary. He had known it since he was a kid.

“...I-I don’t understand...”

“I got into an accident before,” started Jinki and Jonghyun gaped at the information, “and I thought I was dead. But then I woke up without the ability to move any of my limbs. I went to America not for business, Jonghyun. I went there for therapy and after years, here I am.”

Jonghyun couldn’t understand. He thought... He thought Jinki hyung was going because...

“Of course you don’t understand,” answered Jinki hyung and Jonghyun just realized that he spoke his thought out loud. “You lost your memory, so how come you would know about it?”

Jinki stared sharply into his eyes.

“But do you know how you did lose your memory, Jonghyun? What did your mother tell you?”

“...I got into a... small accident and hit my... head...”

Jinki shook his head. “No, you didn’t. You saved someone, Jonghyun... Someone who is very important to us all...”

Someone? Important?

“That someone was in danger... Everything was because of my mother,” Jinki sent a sad smile to his brother and Taemin squeezed his shoulder comfortingly, “You saved that person... You fought for him, to defend him... but you took the blow of the hit and it damaged your memory. Do you still can’t remember anything?”

Jonghyun groaned, feeling his head thumping painfully. He felt Minho sat beside him, murmuring the words ‘calm down, hyung’.

“I... I dreamt about something a while ago...” whispered Jonghyun. “I dreamt about the flower garden in your mansion, hyung... and... and there were conversations... but I couldn’t understand it...”

He knew that dream was connected with his lost memory. That flower garden was such an important place for them.

“You dreamt about it, Jonghyun?”

“Yeah, and... I always found myself crying after that... but I couldn’t remember anything.”

Jinki crouched down in front of him and Jonghyun opened his eyes, finding the older boy smiling gently at him. “Do you remember Kibum?”

“...ki... bum?”

Kibum. Kibum. Kibum.

“No... Argh,” grunted Jonghyun, another wave of headache hit him again.

“Hear me out, Jonghyun. We were a group of five at that time. Me, you, Taemin, Minho, and... Kibum. We met him the last. Me and Taemin are you cousin, right? And Minho is our close friend, right?”

Jonghyun nodded. “Yeah...” He croaked.

“We met Kibum, the little boy of a maid working for my family. We became best friend with him and you were the closest to him. Do you, by any chance, remember that?”

Jonghyun frowned. He had this image in his mind about him and one kid running together but...

“I don’t know,”

“You were attached to the hips with him, Jonghyun,” continued Jinki with a small smile, “the both of you were going anywhere together. Sometimes you even left the three of us alone. You both had your own world.”

The flower garden appeared in his mind. And Jinki. And Taemin. And Minho. And... and one other boy...

“There were us,” whispered Jonghyun, squeezing his eyes close as he tried to see his mind, “and one boy... who?”

“That was Kibum,” murmured Jinki hyung gently. “Kim Kibum. He was younger than you. He called us with hyung.”

Yeah, Jonghyun could hear the voices inside his head: Jonghyun hyung!

“I can’t make his face!” hissed Jonghyun.

He hit his knee in depression and Taemin quickly went over to grab onto his wrist, stopping him. “Hyung, don’t,”

Jonghyun blinked his teary eyes; since when did he cry he didn’t even know anymore. He had his three best friends sitting around him with a sad yet gentle smile on their lips, as if they were tending a little kid. Jonghyun felt so small all of the sudden.

“...I can’t remember anything!”

Jinki hyung cradled his face in his palms and Jonghyun was forced to stare into his calming eyes. “Jonghyun! Listen to me. His name is Kim Kibum, he is a year younger than you and... and you loved him, Jonghyun.”

He loved him? Jonghyun loved this Kibum?

“I... loved him...?”

“Yes. You wouldn’t admit it but we knew everything. We are your family, Jonghyun. We know everything.”

Jonghyun blinked his eyes, before his sight was blurred and he found that he was crying. He bit his lip and felt his body trembled. Jonghyun didn’t know the reason of why he was crying but he wasn’t going to find out any time. He just needed to cry everything out. His heart was so heavy; it felt like pressing from the inside and wanted to explode out of him.

Jonghyun was tired. His friends came all of sudden, telling him that all the words his mother told him were all lies and they were telling him the ‘truth’. It was all too much.

“I don’t know! I don’t know! I don’t know anymore! Which is right!? Which is wrong!?”

Then he felt arms around him. Warm, comforting arms hugging him close.

Jonghyun cried for hours that day.

***

The next day, Jonghyun woke up with swollen eyes and his three friends were waiting for him outside of his bedroom. “Come with us. We will bring you to Kibum.”

That was why Jonghyun was sitting along in the car, with Minho driving and Taemin sitting on the passenger seat, chatting lightly with him. All Jonghyun could do was staring on the passing roads and he felt his mind was so noisy. It buzzed noisily and he didn’t want to think.

Jonghyun knew this place. It felt some kind of familiar to him yet he couldn’t point out where they were. It felt like the memory in the back of his mind, hidden down completely from himself.

They told him to wait outside. They didn’t let him go inside that shabby apartment. Then why did they bring Jonghyun here? To tease him? To mock him?

Jonghyun could hear the foreign voice of someone else from the place. It was not Jinki, or Minho, and certainly not Taemin. Was it that Kibum...?

“...jinki hyung? Is that you?”

The voice was so quiet, as if afraid to talk too loud, Jonghyun noted. He wanted to see him. He wanted to know him more. He wanted to remember him.

“Yeah, it’s hyung. How are you today, Kibum? Do you miss me?”

The answer was so reluctant and Jonghyun took a step closer to the door. He peeked from the gap and sighed when he couldn’t see well. He was so curious!

“...I-I thought it was... just a dream...”

“Kibummie, I’m standing in front of you right now, don’t you see?” Jonghyun could head the sad tone in Jinki’s cheerful; voice. It was like he wanted to keep his face happy but his voice betrayed him. He couldn’t make Jinki’s face in his mind.

“Yeah...”

“Hi, Kibum hyung!” And that was Taemin. That kid could always act so happy in front of everyone. Jonghyun used to question that ability of him. With his cute face, he could lighten your world in a second. Jonghyun like to come to him when he was down before.

“Kibum.” Minho greeted him quietly. It was so like Minho. Jonghyun had always asked him about that. He was so polite; he respected the elders and he kept his composure all the time.

Jonghyun leaned his back against the wall beside the rotten door. He hears some soft talks before Jinki’s voice rang: “Kibum-ah, what are you looking at?”

They got silent all of sudden and Jonghyun was sure those three were staring at that Kibum. The silence was so deafening and Jonghyun felt like running away from the killing atmosphere.

“...are you... waiting for Jonghyun?”

Jonghyun snapped his eyes open and he gaped. Why would Jinki say his name out of blue?

He waited. Jonghyun waited for the answer. He wanted to know what kind of answer this Kibum would say. If those three had said it like that, then he should have given a positive answer.

“...no.”

It hurt. Jonghyun watched as an ant walked by his shoe on the concrete ground. He didn’t know this Kibum. He didn’t remember him even the slightest. But when he said no, Jonghyun felt like the ability to breathe was leaving him.

“Kib—”

“...no, because he is not going to come back.”

And it made Jonghyun held onto the side of his head, wincing at the slight pain. He felt the need to see this boy. He had the sudden huge urge to meet this boy. And so Jonghyun stood up. He stood up from the spot he was crouching down against the wall, standing right in front of the door.

He had to. He wanted to.

Jonghyun pushed the door, and four pairs of eyes were turned to his figure standing by the opening.

And his eyes landed on the foreign figure in the room. Besides Jinki, Minho, and Taemin.

There he was. Kim Kibum.

The way that Kibum had his eyes widened so big made Jonghyun stopped breathing. He knew those eyes.

“...who...?”

Jonghyun stood by the door, keeping his gaze locked on the boy. He didn’t remember him, but he felt a big, a very big part in his self was relieved to see him. There was like the missing piece of the puzzle was placed on its right place.

“K-Kibum-ah, it’s... Jonghyun.”

Jonghyun watched the invisible wall around that Kibum was slowly breaking down and he could see his inner self. That Kibum backed away, as if he was scared to see Jonghyun before he realized that he was trembling. He gasped for air, before fat tears made their way down his pale sunken cheeks.

Jonghyun wanted nothing but to wipe those tears away. His hands were itching to do that. He wanted to hold him tight.

“Kibum-ah?” Jinki whispered gently, scooting closer to the crying boy. Kibum hugged his legs, tears eyes buried against his knees and Jonghyun felt his heart ached. He felt the sense of familiarity of this crying boy.

“...go... away.” Kibum whispered. Jonghyun saw Taemin shifted on his spot and forced a smile. “What are you talking about, Kibum hyung?”

“...just leave me alone,” he murmured lowly and continued to back away towards the corner. Minho grabbed onto Taemin’s arm and he did the same to Jonghyun.

Jonghyun gaped questioningly at Minho. They brought him here and then he wanted to bring him out again? He just got in! Jonghyun wanted to shake his hand off but then Minho sent him that begging look. He looked back at Jinki who was staring at him with a weak smile. He mouthed ‘go’.

He let Minho took him out, but not without sparing the last glance on Jinki who was slowly bringing the crying boy into his arms.

***

Jonghyun locked his eyes on the figure sleeping by the corner of the room. He hadn’t moved even a single inch ever since he got back into the place again. Jinki had called him to enter, telling him to not speak too loud as to not wake the poor boy. Jonghyun had been staring at that calm face without saying anything but he was thinking for the whole time.

“Jonghyun,”

“I want to know more. Tell me more,” cut Jonghyun before Jinki could say anything else. Jonghyun turned around, moving to where his three friends were occupying the corner of the room.

“Alright. Sit down and we will tell you everything. Make sure to keep your attention.”

It was ironic to know. Jonghyun forgot so many things, so much memories, so much happiness, and he was living in a lie for these years. Jinki told him everything; Minho slipped in some things in between the lines; and Taemin smiled sadly while remembering those memories. Jonghyun couldn’t help but felt his heart ached in the most painful twist.

He stayed by that spot, refusing to move even though Jinki told him to rest for a while. Jonghyun was waiting and he kept on waiting, until finally those eyes were opened and they locked on him.

“...jongie hyung...? No way—”

“Yeah, it’s... me. I couldn’t remember anything yet but... it’s me.” Jonghyun whispered softly as he watched Kibum struggled to get up. When was the last time he eat? He looked so thin.

“Jinki hyung,” croaked Kibum under his breathe, red swollen eyes darting from one spot to another before finally Jinki came to him.

“Hey, Bum,”

Jonghyun wanted to glare at Jinki. He kept on calling him with various nicknames. And Kibum kept on searching for Jinki. Was it right that they used to love each other before? Not Jinki?

“Is this another dream, hyung?” Kibum asked, fingers gripping onto the front of Jinki’s shirt. The oldest boy shook his head no and pressed a soft kiss on his temple. “No, it’s not, Bummie. We are here now. We came back for you.”

Jonghyun wanted to tear Jinki off from Kibum. He didn’t know why but he felt the huge jealousy in his chest.

He was thinking as to how to rip Jinki’s head off when finally he realized that Kibum was looking at him. “The real Jonghyun hyung?” He poked his cheek. Jonghyun stopped breathing. It felt familiar.

“Yeah,” said Jinki with a small smile as he held onto the thin boy. Jonghyun kept on staring at him without saying anything. He heard how his heart was beating so fast as he felt giddy with the familiar scene. He knew it did happen before.

“It’s real... Then you are also real, Jinki hyung? Minho too? And Taeminnie?”

“Of course!” Taemin’s voice piped in and he crawled closer. Jognhyun watched as Kibum reached for the youngest boy and cradled his cheeks, before bringing him into a hug. The surprised look on Taemin’s face was so priceless and Jinki held back a laugh.

The picture was so precious and Jonghyun was determined to get his memories back.
