Indestructible Chap. 9 : Jinki II
Title: Indestructible
Pairing: SHINee-OT5; Jongkey; hinted!2min
Genre: Friendship, Angst, Drama, Slice of life, Semi-Romance
Length: Series
Summary: Jinki and Jonghyun got hurt because of him. Minho and Taemin left because of him. What was the use of living for Kibum? There was nothing left to him. Or that was what he used to think until four people that he loved the most were coming back. This was a story of broken friendship between five young boys who tried to mend the bond once again.

The last thing that he remembered was when he was on the phone with Kibum. After that, everything was blurred.
Jinki was awake in the hospital, with various machines stuck to him and numbness all over his body. He remembered Taemin’s crying face and Minho’s relieved face, along with the hysteric voice of his mother. He wanted to move, wanted to talk, wanted to do just anything but he couldn’t move.
He heard his brother telling him what happened; from the way his mother blamed everything to Kibum and he felt his chest flipped in the most uncomfortable way, from the time his mother telling her people to beat Kibum up, from the time Jonghyun came to the rescue but ended up hurt and losing a part of his memory, until the news of his brother and Minho to be sent abroad.
Jinki wanted to cry, but he couldn’t.
He heard his mother’s hysteric voice, high-pitched protest spoken to the doctors about his condition before finally he was also brought to America to heal properly. He didn’t want to leave but Jinki knew he had no voice in this, not that he could talk properly. Taemin sent him a sad smile, and they went abroad.
Jinki made a mental promise with himself to heal as fast as possible, before finally he would go back to Kibum, bringing everyone together like before.
It took time but Jinki was sure he was healed. Taemin had finished his school a few weeks ago and he called him.
“Taemin-ah, check your email and read it carefully. I need you to do something for me before I could go out from here.”
His brother was so surprised to know that his older brother had found out everything, reading the title of the document: Kim Kibum.
Jinki told his brother to bring Minho and went back to their hometown, trying to find Kibum. Taemin called him at the first day after they landed on Korea. He barely registered every word but from the way Taemin cried and mumbled the words ‘he changed’ then Jinki was sure it was not good news.
He wanted to go back. For the whole years of him healing, Jinki had his most trusted secretary to do everything for him. She was loyal to him and she never spilled any information out. He was forever thankful to her.
Jinki just needed to wait a few more days.
It was when he was about to go to sleep when his phone went off.
“Minho?” Jinki knew something was disturbing the younger male.
“Hyung. Did I disturb your sleep?”
“No, you don’t. What is it?”
“I... I don’t know what else that I should do, hyung. It’s... depressing. I can’t stop Taemin from crying and I can’t make him open up. Kibum would never open up to me...”
Jinki heard Minho murmured weakly, depressed if he could say it.
“Minho... Hang in there. Because I have good news for you.”
“Good news?”
“Yeah. That good news.” He was sure Minho got what he meant. At the sharp intake of Minho’s breath, Jinki smiled.
“Hyung? Are you saying...?”
“Yes, Minho.” I’m going back, was what he didn’t say but he knew Minho understood everything very well.
Right after he could escape with the help of his secretary, Jinki flew back to Korea. It was not like his mother would care with him. He was such a failed son, and she was depending on Taemin more now.
He was greeted with the sight of his brother’s smiling face and Minho’s gentle pat on his arm right after he walked out from the airport. Taemin said about how much he missed him and how happy he was to see him healed and could do everything properly now.
Minho sent him a tired smile and Jinki got the message.
“Hyung,”
“Let’s go there. We couldn’t wait anymore.”
Minho nodded, driving the car to the place which was used to be their haven.
Jinki stared at the building without saying anything. Taemin was fidgeting on his seat as Jinki let out a heavy sigh when the car stopped. He smiled, stepping down from the car and took a deep breath. This place held so many memories of them. Jinki couldn’t contain his happiness as he was once again back here but the thought of what would be their step next was kind of saddened him.
“Hyung. Let’s go.”
Jinki let out a soft breath of, “Yeah.”
They climbed up the stairs, no words exchanged between them. Jinki felt his stomach churned as he took another step closer to Kibum. From what Minho and Taemin told him, Kibum changed so much that they couldn’t recognize him anymore.
Jinki doubted whether he could stop Kibum’s misery.
Minho knocked on the door and Jinki watched from behind. He stared at Minho’s slumped back. He could see how tired the younger male was; physically and mentally.
“Kibum, can we talk?” whispered Minho.
“No.” The answer came too quick and Jinki was so surprised with the voice. Kibum’s voice in his memory was more cheerful and lively. It felt weird.
Taemin sighed and stared at his brother as if saying ‘it is like this, hyung’.
Jinki watched as Minho gripped his fists, turning around to see him before stepping away.
“I tried.” His tone was so defeated and tired. Jinki nodded and sent him a smile, patting him on his back. He stepped closer, with Minho watching him from behind. He gently knocked on the door, waiting for any response from inside. To say that Jinki was not afraid was an understatement.
“Go away.” He heard that foreign voice again. Jinki felt his fingers shaking in excitement and worry. He parted his lips, forcing his voice out and,
“Kibum-ah.”
Jinki waited. The silence was so deafening and he grew worried in each second passed. If Kibum didn’t want to open the door then Jinki surely didn’t know what to do.
But then he heard it.
There was a soft ‘thud’ from inside and everyone held back their breath. The handle of the door was being turned and Jinki smiled, feeling his heart drumming in his chest. There was no more sound from inside and Jinki knew the hesitation.
“Can you open the door for me, Bummie?” He tried again.
It was silent for a few minutes before the door was slowly creaked open in the slightest gap, letting the light from outside entering the dark apartment. Jinki readied himself from what he was going to see. There he came. He stared at Kibum’s face from the slight gap and then he heard his hoarse voice calling hesitantly: “J-Jinki hyung...?”
He smiled.
“Yes, it’s me.”
It was a killing slow motion when Kibum finally opened the door a bit wider. Jinki held back his breath; Kibum did change for real. He remembered Kibum as the most cheerful one between them, the most nagging, the only one who kept his appearance to the best.
“...hyung?” The voice was so small, as if he was afraid if he talked louder something would happen. Jinki felt his eyes stung, and he forced a smile on his lips. “Bummie, I’m back.”
Kibum dragged his gaze on him and on the other spot behind them, trying to find someone else. Jinki carefully took a step closer, hand pushing the door more as to reveal the boy inside.
“Hyung,” whispered Kibum softly, and Jinki held back a sob at how sweet it sounded in his ears.
“Yes, yes, it’s me, Kibummie... It’s hyung...”
Kibum took some steps backwards, letting Jinki pushed the door and the older male stepped inside. He looked around the once-colorful place, sighing heavily at how the place seemed like so dull, and no color. The slight tug on his sleeve made Jinki stopped looking around and he found Kibum staring at him hopefully.
“...are you... for real...?”
Jinki smiled, patting his head softly, “Yes, I’m real. Don’t you want to give hyung a hug, Kibummie?”
Kibum hesitated for a few seconds, before he carefully stepped forward. Jinki felt those bony fingers clutched onto his shirt before he enveloped the younger male in his arms. He wanted to cry for real; he had Kibum back in his arms.
The first seconds of the hug was so silent, but then after a few minutes, Jinki felt Kibum trembled. “Kibum...?”
The front of his shirt was starting to wet and Jinki just realized that Kibum was crying. How could he forget; Kibum was the crybaby. He chuckled bitterly, shaking his head before tightening his hug. “It’s okay... I got you now... I got you, Kibummie.”
The silent sob turned into a whimpered cry as Kibum cried on his shoulder. Jinki let the tear rolled down his cheek and he pressed a comforting kiss on the younger male’s head.
“Just cry, Kibummie. Let it all out, don’t hold back anymore.”
He heard muffled mumbles but Jinki would ignore them for this time. He would let Kibum cry for a while.
Jinki heard soft shuffles from behind and he just remembered that there were two people with him. He turned his head slightly, motioning for them to enter. He held back a chuckle seeing Taemin cried just as hard as Kibum. Those two were really crybabies. Minho wanted to cry but he held back, Jinki could see his eyes were red.
Jinki sighed softly. He got back three of his brothers, but then they still needed one more.
Kibum fell asleep after crying his heart out. Jinki smiled, caressing his hair on his lap. Taemin sat in front of him, eyes locked on the sleeping boy as he held back himself from crying the second round. Minho stood silently on the corner of the room, eyes moving here and there.
“This place,” started Minho, stopping the silence, “changed a lot.”
Taemin sighed and nodded, “Yeah, it is.”
Jinki agreed to them. He remembered the spot he was currently sitting right now was the spot where he used to sit and played games in his phone while waiting for Kibum to prepare their dinner. The spot was so dusty; all over the apartment was so dusty and Jinki doubted Kibum had ever cleaned the place.
He remembered some spots. The place where he used to crouch down, hiding from the nagging Kibum, or the spot where Minho usually sat and read his books, or the spot where Taemin loved to sit and did his home works, or the corner where Kibum used to cuddle with Jonghyun.
“What happened to you, Kibummie,” whispered Jinki softly.
As if on cue, the younger male on his lap woke up from the heavy sleep. He sat up slowly, not aware of three pairs of eyes were watching him. Jinki watched as Kibum blinked, before he spotted him.
“Is this a dream?” murmured Kibum. Jinki smiled and shook his head. “No, it’s not. Why would you think so?”
“...because I kept on dreaming of you coming back but when I woke up, I found that I’m alone, just like always.”
The words were so simple but it hurt Jinki so much. Taemin whimpered in his cry before he couldn’t hold back himself, reaching forward to hug Kibum close.
“Hyung, hyung, I miss you...” Taemin choked between his sobs. Kibum blinked questioningly, mind registering everything. “...taeminnie?”
“Yes, it’s me,” croaked Taemin, more fat tears rolled down his cheeks. Kibum lifted his arms up, returning the hug. “I know this warmth... This is Taeminnie’s...” murmured Kibum weakly. Taemin cried more and buried his face on Kibum’s shoulder, not caring about anything else in the worlds.
Jinki saw that Minho was wiping a few drops of tears silently and he motioned the boy to come closer. Minho seemed hesitant at first but when Jinki mouthed ‘it’s okay’, Minho was joining the two in a second.
His heart felt so full; Jinki smiled. He no longer cared that his tears were rolling down his face, not even Minho could hold back himself more. They cried for a moment, with Kibum and Taemin being the loudest obviously.
As Jinki watched his three brothers crying, he sighed. It should be like this from now on. He was determined to bring back the broken bonds between them again.
He scooted closer, arms enveloping the three into his arms, with a content smile on his lips.
His eyes caught the sight of the broken photo frame by the other side of the room, and he stared at one face of the five of them who was not here with them. Not yet.
