Chapter 12: Family II

“Be happy. All of you, too. I’m sorry for everything... Be happy and forget everything about me. Okay? Pinky promise with me...?”

“I’M NOT LETTING YOU GO ONCE AGAIN!!!” Jonghyun screamed out loud, legs running forward and hands grabbing Kibum’s wrist. Kibum opened his eyes, feeling the tear drops falling down on his face.

“IF... IF YOU THINK THAT I’M GOING TO FORGET YOU AGAIN...”

Kibum watched as Jonghyun’s tears fell against his face, while arms were trying to pull him up. He was hanging by the edge of the building.

“You are... so cruel, Kibum...” hissed Jonghyun as Kibum felt himself being lifted up and his feet, for once again, touched the ground. It was when finally everything hit him hard, and he felt his body trembled.

“...oh God. Oh God, what have I done...”

Shaky fingers grabbed onto the front of Jonghyun’s shirt as fat tears running down his cheeks. “H-Hyung! Hyung! Min—oh God—Taem—” He started hyperventilating and lost his breathe, fingers curled on everything he could find.

“Kibum-ah!? Kibum!”

Black. Everything went black.

Jonghyun stared at the sleeping boy on the bed, eyes swollen and sore from the continuous crying. He should be sleeping, seeing that he hadn’t been asleep fully for a few days, but he couldn’t keep his eyes off the unconscious boy. Jinki hyung sat by the corner of the room, eyes drowsy but he refused to sleep. The two youngest were curled up on the couch, sleeping peacefully after crying their eyes out.

Jinki sat up and walked towards where Jonghyun was sitting on the edge of the hospital bed. “Jonghyun, go to sleep. I will watch over him.”

Shaking his head no, Jonghyun frowned slightly. “I want to wait until he wakes up.”

“He will not be awake anytime soon, Jonghyun. The doctor said it before,”

“I know. I just... want to stare at him with my own eyes... to make up on how many years I have been spending without him.” He whispered, fingers trailing over Kibum’s black hair. Jinki grabbed onto him and turned him around, Jonghyun refused at first but then let Jinki did it.

The oldest boy stared into his eyes and Jonghyun locked his gaze on his fingers. It took a few minutes before Jonghyun’s breathe turned shaky. Jinki brought him to his embrace and Jonghyun pressed his crying face against Jinki’s stomach, fingers gripping the back of his shirt tightly.

“...why me, hyung? Why him? Why us?” Jonghyun muttered against his shirt, tears wetting the fabric but Jinki could care less. He sighed and shook his head even though Jonghyun couldn’t see him do that. “I don’t know the answer, Jonghyun. All I know is that... we are here now and we will always here.”

Jonghyun’s silent tears kept on spilling out and Jinki patted his head softly, a gesture to tell him to let everything out, just like what he used to do when they were little. Jonghyun would come to him, crying because his mother scolded him for the low mark on his math test.

“Let everything out, Jonghyun... and then we will start a new one.”

Kibum opened his eyes from the blinding sunlight from the slightly opened curtain by the side of the room. His eyes felt heavy and everything seemed spinning for him.

He found the sleeping Jonghyun by the side of the bed, Jinki curled on the nearest chair, and Taemin who was snuggled up into Minho’s neck as they slept. He remembered the latest incident happened to them. He lost his mind, wandering around, and almost ended up with suicide. He spoke a lot yesterday, and then they came to him, catching him before... that.

Kibum breathed softly, trying his best to not making any sound and he was relieved to see that all of them were still sleeping. They needed it.

His mind went back to the incident on the rooftop. How could he ever think if doing that? Kibum just couldn’t believe it himself. He was really scared of height yet how come he had gone to the rooftop? He felt shiver ran down his spine as he thought just how high the gap between him on the rooftop and the ground down there.

There was swift movement by his side and Kibum glanced down, watching as Jonghyun’s eyes slowly blinked at the blinding sunshine. Kibum felt the corner of his lips curled up. It had been a while since he smiled.

Jonghyun had his gaze locked on him yet he was still half asleep, Kibum concluded.

“Hi,” Kibum whispered hoarsely, making Jonghyun jolted awake on his seat. Kibum grinned softly at him and watched as Jonghyun frantically leaned to him, palms holding his face tenderly.

“Kibummie!? You okay? Do you feel hurt anywhere?”

Shaking his head no, Kibum motioned his gaze towards the sleeping boys and silently hoped Jonghyun could lower his voice. Getting the hint, Jonghyun sat back by the side of the bed, arms never leaving Kibum.

“Are you sure you are okay? Do you want me to call the doctor?”

Kibum nodded his head let out a low hum. Jonghyun breathed softly and stared into his eyes. Lifting his eyebrow, Kibum sent him a questioning look. Jonghyun’s plump lips curled into a small smile before he chuckled.

“You know... I haven’t seen that gesture for a long time,” Jonghyun whispered, finger poking Kibum’s lifted eyebrow. Kibum had the urge to pout but he ended up rolling his eyes.

It had been a while since he had felt this relaxed. Maybe the impact from his almost-suicide turned him back. Kibum knew he was not in his right mind for these past years yet with them being with him here was enough to bring him back to normal.

Jonghyun’s eyes lit in happiness at his signature gesture before leaning down to his level. “Kibummie, you are going to be surprised with this... but I get my memories back.”

Of course Kibum was surprised. He whispered a low ‘really?’ and Jonghyun nodded excitedly. “It was yesterday when I got them back. I was sleeping and then they came back to me into my dreams, flowing like a cheesy drama. I remember everything now, so don’t worry about anything. I’m here now. We are here.”

Kibum had a bit doubt about that but Jonghyun just had to lean forward and pressed his lips softly to his. Kibum’s breathe hitched at the contact and he stared wide eyed at Jonghyun.

“What are you—”

“Shh. You love me, I love you. It’s enough for us.”

Kibum went silent but the blush on his face was enough. He bent his head down; ignoring the silent giggle Jonghyun was having right now. The older male grinned, the happiness was evident in his eyes, Kibum could see it; before pecking his lips again. Kibum jutted his lip in embarrassment, wanting to retort at him for stealing two kisses from him without warning but then—

“Yeah, right. Molest him as soon as he is awake.” Jinki’s voice was heard softly and Jonghyun snapped his head towards the oldest male. He playfully glared at him and Kibum covered his mouth to hide his smile. Jinki got up from his seat and stretched his limbs before walking towards the bed.

“You fine, Bum?” Jinki muttered to him, one hand caressing his head. Kibum smiled at him and nodded, leaning more into the touch. He ignored the way Jonghyun pouted by his side and giggled when Jinki pressed a light kiss to the crown of his head. Jonghyun growled under his breath before grabbing him close.

“Hyung, I swear if you touch him again—”

“What will you do?” Jinki questioned him, “Kibum adores me more than you.”

Jonghyun gaped at him. “That is not right!”

“I think that’s right,” Kibum decided to add more fuel into Jonghyun’s fire. Jonghyun stared at him in disbelief while shaking his head. “No, this is not right. You love me, Kibum, I know it.”

Kibum fought the urge to blush and he stared at Jinki. “Hyung, why is he repeating that sentence? It’s embarrassing enough that it takes years for me to tell him but he says it nonchalantly.” Kibum blabbered, earning a soft laugh from Jinki. Kibum pinched his side as to lower his voice and Jinki winced at the pain, muttering ‘sorry’.

“Oh God. You don’t know how much I miss you,” Jinki muttered, sitting by the other side of the bed and brought Kibum to his arms. Kibum sighed softly and hugged him tight, fingers fisting the back of Jinki’s shirt.

“I know.” He whispered. Oh God he missed this.

Jonghyun just had to ruin the moment with saying, “Are you cheating on me, Kibum?”

Kibum grunted and the sound was muffled against Jinki’s shoulder. “Why is he being so annoying?” He grumbled into the shoulder and Jinki’s body trembled from the laughter he was holding in. Jonghyun pouted and scooted to them, hugging them both.

“I miss this too.” He spoke, voice soft and small. Kibum relaxed and hummed. They said nothing and kept on hugging each other, the embrace was getting tighter in each minute.

“Sure, forget us and have fun, you three,” Taemin whined from behind, arms folded in front of his chest. Minho yawned and stretched his body, half-smiling.

“Come here,” Kibum whispered softly and it took a second before Taemin pounced on them. Jonghyun let out a loud ‘ooff’ and Jinki was almost thrown to the floor but Minho held onto him. Taemin took all the space in the embrace.

“I miiiiiiiiiiisssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss you so much!” Taemin shrieked against Kibum’s neck. He giggled in happiness by himself, before laughing loudly. Kibum stared questioningly at him before exchanging glances with the others.

“Is it just me or Taemin is losing his mind after me?” He joked and it sent them all into silent mode. Kibum realized his mistake and sent them a sad smile.

“Kibum,”

“You know... I think I was crazy this whole time. I mean, I have a mental problem. Don’t you think so?” He asked, fingers reaching up to play with Taemin’s soft hair which was tickling his skin.

“You are not crazy, Kibum, don’t say that!”

“I locked myself, hyung. I ignored everything. I blocked everything out. I wandered around without me realizing it. And I... I almost killed myself. Isn’t that losing my mind?” Kibum asked skeptically, an eyebrow lifting.

“I think,” Minho spoke for the first time ever since he woke up, “that you are losing your mind is right. But I don’t think you are crazy. Well, if you want to put the meaning of crazy with your constant nagging and mood swings, then it will fit better.” He joked.

Kibum glared at him. “Are you insulting me, tall freak?”

Taemin giggled loudly and the tense atmosphere was gone. Jinki sighed in defeat while rubbing his face. Minho was already starting a fight again with Kibum.

“Well, I’m just stating the fact, Bum. You are acting like that,” Minho shrugged challengingly. Kibum gaped in disbelief, “Wah, I can’t believe this. I just get my mind straight yet you want to pick a fight me already? Very well, Minho! Now get me some food! I’m hungry,” he grumbled in annoyance. Taemin hadn’t stopped giggling and he lifted his head up.

“Kibummie hyung, why are you so cute?” He asked in a whisper. Kibum’s eyes twinkled, fingers tracing Taemin’s cheeks. “I should ask the same to you. Why are you the only one who can understand me?”

“Hey!” Jonghyun protested at that. “What about me!?”

“Look at those cheeks, Taeminnie! You are so adorable!” Kibum cooed at him, completely ignoring Jonghyun. The other muttered some words under his breath and was pulled out of the room by the two other.

“Come on,” Jinki said, before Minho continued, “let the girls cooing. We should get some foods for them as the manly boys.”

“I HEARD THAT.” Kibum growled from inside the room, followed by Taemin’s offended high-pitched grunt.

Kibum watched from behind the cup he was holding. Jinki was flipping through the TV channels, grumbling for the lack of interesting programs like an old man. Taemin squealed for the tenth time from the delicious taste of the ice cream he was eating, whining everytime Minho stole the choco chip from it. And then there was Jonghyun who was staring at his face intently.

‘What’, Kibum mouthed to him. Jonghyun shook his head and grinned dumbly. He rolled his eyes.

“Hyung,” Kibum called for Jinki and got an answer with a low hum. He twisted the cup in his hands, contemplating of asking this but then why not.

“What are we going to do... after this?” He asked silently, hoping to not ruin the atmosphere. Thankfully it was not, but he took everyone’s attention to him.

Jinki went silent, still flipping onto channels before he stood up. He walked towards the bed Kibum was currently sitting on and stood beside it.

“We... have been through a lot. I know it.” He started. Kibum nodded, keeping his gaze down on his lap. He kicked the air with his legs, covering his nervousness with that. He missed the grin on Jinki’s face.

“Do you know just what is going on in my mind for all this time? Do any of you know?” Jinki questioned to everyone, earning a shake of head from Taemin. Jinki grinned.

“I’m thinking of moving away from here. All of us.”

Four pairs of eyes were staring at him as if he had grown another head. Jinki shrugged. “It’s not that bad idea, right?”

“...hyung, you don’t lose your mind now, don’t you?” Kibum whispered carefully to him. Jinki laughed and ruffled his hair, much to his dismay. “I think I am. But it’s for the better.”

“How could you say it better? You know it yourself—”

“Let me finish, kids,” Jinki pouted. Kibum rolled his eyes.

“So, as I was saying before, I’m planning on moving away. Our parents, all of ours, don’t seem to like the idea of hanging around Kibum, isn’t it?”

At that, Kibum winced.

“You are so honest, hyung.”

“I take it from you, Kibum.”

“Ugh.”

“So, I talked to them a few days ago.”

“You did!? When!?” Four voices talked in the same time. Jinki grinned. “Oh, how I love seeing this reaction from you.”

“Stop that and tell us quickly,” Kibum threatened, the cup was raised up in the air as to be thrown to the oldest male. Jinki grinned and held his palms up in surrender before continuing, “I talked to mom.” He said, looking at his brother and he could see how Taemin gulped down his saliva. He smiled at the adorable act, “And I also called yours,” he glanced to Jonghyun and Minho.

“We talked about a lot of things. They asked me where we were at these past weeks and so on. You have to see mom’s face, Taemin-ah, it was ridiculous. She was furious, and I was sure that she had wanted to hit me a few times but she held back, you know just how high her pride is. So, as I was mentioning Kibum,”

“Wait, wait. You spoke out my name out of blue?” Kibum gripped onto the cup. He was afraid the cup would fall out of his hands. Jinki nodded.

“Yes. I said ‘do you remember Kibum? Our friend from childhood?’ Oh, her face was... damn it, I should have recorded it... She was shocked; I think she hadn’t thought that Kibum’s name would be spoken again after all these years. So, I said that we found you and that was where we were all this time.”

“How... How was my mother, hyung?” Minho asked silently.

“She was stoned, of course. I could still remember her calling Kibum filth at that time. I could never forgive her up until now.” Jinki muttered under his breath. Minho glanced down.

“I told them that... that I wanted to take you all with me. We argued. I told them that they don’t have the right to control you anymore, to control us anymore, we are adults now. They said to me to stop hanging around with Kibum but then I refused them. They said that if we still wanted to do that, then we can say goodbye to them.”

Kibum sighed, breaking the silence in the room. “What did I say...? I ruin your life, don’t I?”

Jonghyun glanced at him and shook his head, arms reaching forward to hug him. “You don’t. Stop thinking like that.”

“This is what I want to ask you now, Jonghyun, Minho, Taemin.”

The three looked at him questioningly. Jinki smiled that angel smile that could put your heart into ease.

“What do you say about leaving everything behind and starting over?”

Kibum yawned, rolling on his bed. Who opened the window this early morning? Groaning in annoyance, Kibum crawled under his cover for a better hide from the blinding sun light, but then luck was not on his side as someone nonchalantly slammed the door of his room opened and giving him the best morning call ever.

“Rise and shine, little Bummie! We have things to do today!”

“Go away!” Kibum grunted under his pillow. There was body on top of him, trapping him down to the bed and suffocating him. Kibum couldn’t breathe.

“Alright, alright, I’m up! Stop killing me, Jinki hyung!!!”

The oldest male grinned and sat up. “You have thirty minutes to get ready!” Then he left with the door closed behind him. Kibum whined and screamed into his pillow.

The door was opened again and Kibum grunted again.

“What is it now? I have thirty minutes, right? I’m awake now!”

Arms wrapped around his torso and Kibum jolted in surprise. “Yeah, we have thirty minutes to do some things, Kibum,” with a quick kiss on the back of his neck.

“Jonghyun, this is still early morning!”

“I know, that’s why!” He muttered into his ear. Kibum wriggled in his arms and sighed as he couldn’t escape. “Would you stop that?” Kibum asked, turning around to look at the male. Jonghyun grinned at him, leaning down, “Nope.”

Sensing where this was going, Kibum backed away. “Jonghyun, I have morning breathe!”

“I don’t care.”

Kibum rolled his eyes as Jonghyun kissed him full on his lips. This man, seriously.

“Stop being such a pervert in the early morning, now let me go. I’m going shopping today with Jinki hyung.”

“But, Kibum, why can’t I go with you?” Jonghyun whined into his neck. Kibum groaned. “Because you will just buy everything you are seeing and I don’t have time to take care of a child like you.”

“So mean!”

“Go away. Maybe disturb Minho or what. God knows when he slept last night. I could hear him playing games from the next room. I’m going to shower.”

“Can I come with you?”

Kibum slammed the door to his face.

“What do you mean with starting over, hyung? How?”

“I did this thing, well, okay; I was planning this for the whole years I was in America. You know, my secretary? Her? Yeah, her. She did everything I asked her to do while I could barely move my toes. I have this business and it makes lots of money. No, it’s not something illegal, just foods business. I have money, I was working before the accident, remember? The money is my hard work and it has nothing to do with mom or dad. It is my money. So I can do anything with that.”

Taemin gaped in amazed, nodding his head. Minho listened carefully.

“And then?” Jonghyun asked, not really getting where this was going.

“I built my own business. I have money invested in some countries and I could say that I’m pretty rich now.” Jinki finished proudly. Kibum snickered at him.

“Continue, please. I have a feeling of how your story will end,” Kibum told him.

“The plan is to get away from here. From them. Not too far if you want but at least we are getting on our own feet. I bought a house, well, in the middle of buying, at Gangnam, yeah, I’m that rich, thank you, and we are going to move there. If you want.”

“Gangnam? Are you serious? Wow, you are loaded, hyung.”

“For someone as clumsy as you, it’s a pretty smart idea.”

“Can’t you just compliment me once in a while?” Jinki whined at that.

“So, we are going to leave mom and dad?” Taemin whispered out. Jinki stared at him and nodded. “Yes, Taemin. Do you want to? Does it make you sad?”

Taemin glanced down to his shoes and they were waiting for his answer. “I’m feeling—”

“Yeah?”

“—ecstatic.”

Kibum laughed on the hospital bed and felt a few drops of tears were rolling down his face. The youngest had grown into a very fine boy.

“That’s my boy!” He shrieked loudly. Taemin grinned at him, cheeks going up.

“How about you Minho?” Jinki asked him. Minho shrugged easily, “It’s not that I like living there. I think I need a new start where people could stop ordering me around.”

Jinki nodded his head. “Jonghyun?”

“I—”

“Jong,” Kibum called silently, “how about your... fiancée?”

Jonghyun rolled his eyes. “Stop talking about that. I canceled everything already. Do you think I will be here when the wedding is today?”

“It’s today!?” The four shrieked. Jonghyun nodded.

“My mom was furious but just let her be. She lied to me all this time so I don’t care.”

It was silent. Everyone was thinking in their own mind; until Kibum broke the silence.

“No one asks about my thought?”

The four tensed and yeah, they forgot about his thought.

“What do you think about this, Kibum?”

Frowning, Kibum sighed and rubbed his face tiredly.

“When do we move out? It’s boring here.”

Minho cackled out of his chair and Taemin excused himself into the bathroom to laugh until he couldn’t stop the tears for half an hour. Jinki did a body gag and Jonghyun kissed Kibum on his lips, ignoring the disgusted sound the others made.

“Hyung,” Kibum called while picking up carrots into the cart. Jinki hummed questioningly, reading onto a package of black pepper sauce.

“Is this really fine? I mean, we are fine, we are happy. But is this the right thing to do?” Kibum asked silently, tracing the shopping list in his hand. Jinki put down the sauce into the shopping cart and pushed the trolley away. Kibum walked behind him in small steps.

“For me, it is. You said yourself that we are happy, right?”

“Yeah...”

“Then it is right.” Jinki smiled happily.

Kibum sighed before letting a smile curled on his lips. “Alright. So as you are loaded, I’m buying everything.”

At Jinki’s shriek, Kibum grabbed any kind of foods into the cart.

“What are you making, hyung?” Taemin popped his head into the kitchen, staring at the busy Kibum in front of the stove.

“A feast. To celebrate.”

“So there will be many dishes?” Taemin asked, eyes shining bright. Kibum grinned. “Yeah.”

“There will be meats?”

“Of course.”

“Woo yeah!” The youngest jumped on his spot. Kibum grabbed another apron from the side of the cupboard and handed it to him.

“Want to help me? The more you help, the faster you can eat.”

“Yes!”

The helping act consisted of two eggs breaking and a bowl of flour toppled to the floor. Taemin ended up being chased away after that.

“No, Minho! This is not stylish! Are you blind or what?”

“Why are you being so noisy on what I’m wearing? It’s not like you are the one going out!” Minho argued, fingers pinching the bridge of his nose. Kibum huffed, “I just want to help you!”

“Then shut up—ugh!” Minho choked on his words as Kibum fastened the tie around his neck. “You shut up.”

“I don’t know why we are arguing a lot, Kibum.”

“Because you just don’t want to hear me. I’m always right. You should have known this now.” Kibum reasoned, patting down the formal shirt on Minho’s chest. The taller sighed and let out a lazy ‘yeah, yeah, whatever’ before wincing again at Kibum’s pinch on his chest.

“Could you at least stop torturing me?” Minho grunted.

“Could you at least stop being a jerk?” Kibum huffed into his face.

Both glared at each other before Minho walked away. Kibum rolled his eyes, watching as Minho grabbed his bag and headed towards the door.

“Do well!” Kibum said to him.

Minho sent him a quick smile before heading out of the door to his job interview.

“Kibum, one more time?”

“I’m tired. You should stop molesting me, seriously,” Kibum groaned into the pillow. He grabbed the blanket up to cover his tired body from the cool night air. Jonghyun scooted closer to him and hugged him close. Kibum ignored the way his hands were rubbing his lower back up and down.

“...fine. We are done for the night.” Jonghyun grumbled in defeat. Kibum rolled his eyes before pressing his face into Jonghyun’s bare shoulder.

Jonghyun thought the other was asleep and he wanted to join him, but the soft call from Kibum stopped him.

“Hey, Jong?”

“Mm?”

“Do you... ever regret this?” He asked silently. Jonghyun backed away a bit to stare into his eyes.

“What are you talking about?”

“This. Have you ever felt any kind of regret for leaving your life behind?” Kibum brought his palms up and caressed the older male’s cheeks. Jonghyun pursed his lips and leaned into the touch.

“No. Why are you asking?” He couldn’t help but felt curious. Kibum shook his head no before hugging him close. He buried his face on Jonghyun’s neck and took a sniff of his scent. He smiled.

“I just want to make sure... that what we did was right. I don’t want to ruin everything again.”

“You didn’t ruin anything and you will never do. I can guarantee it for you.”

“Do you ever love that girl?” Kibum asked, jealousy creeping up. Jonghyun chuckled, “No. I can’t even see her romantically. Oh God, I even forget her name now!”

Kibum laughed at that.

“Yeah, of course you forget her name when all you chant out is my name everyday.” Kibum teased him. Jonghyun huffed before tickling his ribs, earning a loud shriek from Kibum’s lips.

There was knock on the wall from the next door, “Lower your voice! It’s midnight!” followed by Jinki’s annoyed huff.

“I will pick the next movie!” Minho jumped out from his seat. Kibum groaned. “Don’t you dare choose any thrilling movie!”

“Anyone want another round of popcorns?” Jinki asked while rising up, grabbing the empty bowls before heading towards the kitchen. The chorused voice of ‘yes’ sounded in the dark living room.

Taemin still couldn’t stop laughing from the last comedy movie and he giggled into his pillow on the carpeted floor. Kibum watched him amusedly.

There was a tug on his arm and Kibum twisted his head aside, before getting a quick kiss on his lips. He rolled his eyes at Jonghyun.

“Stop stealing kisses from Kibum, you brat,” Jinki muttered from behind and hit the back of Jonghyun’s head. Kibum muffled his laugh into his hands as Jonghyun opened his mouth to argue, but Minho silenced them as a new movie was playing already.

Kibum was glad that Minho chose a proper movie this time and not playing around with him with horror movie. Taemin laughed at the cheesy opening of the movie.

Kibum watched from the corner of his eyes to Jinki hyung who was munching on popcorn more than paying attention to the movie; then to Minho who was leaning his head back on Kibum’s knees as he sat down on the carpet; with Taemin who was laying down with his head propped on Minho’s lap; and to Jonghyun who was snuggling to him while squeezing his hand tight.

Kibum wouldn’t trade his family to any other thing in this world.
