Chapter 2: Jinki

When Kibum’s mother passed away because of the severe illness, Jinki remembered hugging the boy to his sleep; Kibum’s tears staining his shirt. He was still so young; Kibum was just 18 when he lost his mother. He was alone now. He didn’t have anyone else rather than the four of them.

Kibum lived alone in that small room in that building. Jinki remembered the first time going there, he gaped and his fists were squeezed tightly. He couldn’t imagine Kibum living there for his whole life, and now knowing that he would live there alone, giving a strong clench on his heart.

Jinki made it up by going to Kibum’s place almost everyday. He got a very long lecture almost everyday as well from his mother, with Taemin hiding behind his back. He wouldn’t let anyone touch his dongsengs. Not Taemin, Kibum, Jonghyun, or even Minho. That was his responsibility as the oldest boy.

Together, they turned the once so dark place became much brighter by coming there almost everyday when they were free. Kibum was so happy; Jinki could see the twinkling in his eyes even though he always said that they were so annoying for coming again and again. Deep down in Kibum’s heart, Jinki knew that Kibum was so thankful to them.

Taemin became so attached to Kibum. The way his brother started to style his self similar to Kibum was giving him more affirmation about his curiosity. He couldn’t say anything though, Taemin was so happy that he had this one hyung whom he could lean on like a mother. He wouldn’t say anything about their own real mother. She was never a good role model for them.

Jinki didn’t know why but he felt that his family, Jonghyun’s, or even Minho’s were not really love them. They saw them as their heirs, not as their children.

He was surprised when he first found Kibum crouching down in the garden, all alone and crying because of the little scratches on his knees. Kibum became attached to him in a very short time; calling him ‘Jinki hyung’ and even saying that he liked that sound. He loved this little kid and Jinki was determined to keep Kibum by his side, to keep him as one of his brothers.

Two years passed after Kibum lost his mother; that little kid had grown up into a beautiful man. Jinki sometimes couldn’t even believe that Kibum was the very same boy which he found crying before. He was a twenty years old beautiful male now. Jinki thought for a while, they had been together for fifteen years already. Wow, it was not a short time. They had been together in everything.

Taemin became Kibum’s imaginary son, Minho was Kibum’s forever-arguing friend in their love-hate relationship, Jonghyun was forever Kibum’s semi-lover, and Jinki would be Kibum’s forever big brother that he could look up to.

About Jonghyun, he knew that Kibum had this different feeling towards him. Hell, even the most innocent Taemin could see it. He sometimes heard Taemin called Jonghyun with ‘dad’ between his tongue-slip. Those two were just too stubborn to admit it.

Jinki smiled at the memories, grabbing his coat from the hanger and wore it. He would stop working now, since he had this sudden urge to meet his little brother, Kibum. He was just walking out from his office when his phone went off. It was such a nice coincidence, Jinki grinned when he saw the caller ID was Kibum.

“Hey, Bum!”

“Hyung! Hyung, where are you?” He heard Kibum’s cheerful voice from the other line. Jinki chuckled and got into his car, starting the engine to let Kibum knew the answer.

“You are going somewhere, hyung?”

“Yeah.Your place. Don’t you have any class today, Bummie?”

“No~ the lecturer called in sick and canceled it. I arrived there tiredly after walking, and grr, hyung, I was so annoyed!”

Jinki laughed, driving down the empty road while putting the phone on speaker and got it down on the dashboard. “Do you want me to bring you anything, Kibum?”

“No. Just come faster, Jinki hyung!” whined Kibum childishly. Jinki laughed loudly at his whining.

“Alright, alright! Stop acting like a spoiled child.”

“Not my fault! You spoil me too much, hyung!” Jinki could imagine Kibum sticking his tongue out while saying that. He knew Kibum too well.

“Um, hyung-ah?

“Hmm?”

“Are you alone? No one with you?”

“Yeah. Why?” asked Jinki. Kibum hummed before continuing, “I want to tell you something later... Come quickly, okay? Before Taemin get back from school,”

“What is it, Bummie? You make it sounds so... dangerous,” joked Jinki. He heard Kibum huffed, before he mumbled into the phone. “I want to talk to you about... Jonghyun hyung.”

“What is it with Jonghyun?”

“I... Uh, I want to tell him... that I like him...”

Jinki had his eyes popped out before he laughed, “Seriously, Kibum? Just now? You want to tell him?”

“Don’t laugh, hyung! At least I want to tell him... Or should I not tell him?”

“No! Don’t! You have to tell him! We will talk about this later. And you better tell me everything!” laughed Jinki into the phone.

“Why are you so mean, hyung! Oh! By the way, I got the CD that you wanted!”

“Which CD?”

“That one!With the red cover!”

“Oh! How did you get it, Kibum?!” asked Jinki curiously, eyes locked on the rear mirror to check onto the other cars. Kibum laughed evilly, “Kim Kibum has his way!”

“You little...”

“Hahaha! You better come faster, hyung! Or this CD won’t be yours!”

“Yah, Kibum!” Jinki whined, wriggling onto his seat and caused his phone to fall down to his legs. “What sound is it, hyung?”

“Nothing, my phone fell down,” said Jinki, looking at the road as it was empty from any car. He unfastened his seat belt and bent down, taking his phone and blew up some dust from the purple phone case that Kibum had gotten him on his birthday last year.

“Hyung, you—”

Jinki was taken aback when he heard the loud sound of honking car. He looked up, finding a big container truck was heading forward to him, and Jinki quickly turned the steering wheel to left. The truck hit onto the back of his car, sending it flew down the hill and crashed down.

“Hyu—”

The call ended forcefully. Kibum still didn’t get the answer to his call.
